The Material Laboratory Studio: waste as possibility proposes rethinking architecture through a situated and innovative practice that connects architectural design with materials science. It is inspired by Adrian Forty’s idea of concrete as a process that embodies the historical and social conditions of a given time. The studio promotes design-based research grounded in experimentation with concretes that incorporate industrial waste—particularly copper slag—as a partial or total substitute for aggregates and as a supplementary cementitious material. In the face of the environmental crisis and the growth of the mining industry, revaluing these by-products becomes urgent: Chile produces 4.5 million tons of slag per year.

The laboratory is conceived as an expanded space of design, where matter ceases to be neutral and becomes an active agent in the formal, technical, and symbolic configuration of the project. Through physical prototypes, structural testing, and flexible formwork—which reduce entrapped air and optimize geometries—the studio seeks to promote material efficiency and new morphological possibilities. Preliminary results show that partial substitutions (25–50%) improve workability and strength, opening the way to architectural applications.
